In 1954, Lawrence "Herkie" Herkimer invented the spirit stick for a Cheerleading team that stood out above all the other teams with their spirit. It started out as a twig, cut and painted in Herkie's garage. Now the spirit stick, usually plastic and hollow inside, is decorated by the Cheer squad with their teams colors and used as a symbol of tribal spirit, unity, and cooperation.
